Official Unofficial APAC 2023 Playlist

APAC 2023

Rock / Indie / Punk / Lofi / Mindset

audio publishers association

assorted artists

I am a commuter again, for one day. And with that commute comes a playlist of tunes to think, to prepare, and to remember. It will be my first time back in New York since the pandemic. It will be my first trek on the bus to the Port Authority, commuter style, since 2016. I think a lot of things will be different and a lot of things will be the same.

If you’re attending the Audio Publishers Association Conference 2023 and stumbled upon this here page, welcome. I hope you dig the tunes. Maybe I’ll see you there. If you’re just here for the tunes, thanks for stopping by.

Farm to Table

Farm to Table

Bartees Strange

2022

Indie / Punk / Funk / So Damn Good

I guess So Damn Good is a genre category for me now. Here's the scene...

I'm in my living room with my 2 oldest sons. We're taking a break from raking leaves outside and have the TV on checking to see if there's a football game on. It's at this time I notice a CBS Sunday Morning video with a band. "Hey guys let's watch this quickly", I say...

The band was Bartees Strange and his backing band. The song was Heavy Heart. And here we are now. For me, Heavy Heart was the best song of 2022. It's raw. It's hard. It's soothing. It's contemplative. It's everything I love about music in 3 minutes, 34 seconds.

The album, Farm to Table, is an eclectic collection of songs from a much needed up and coming voice of rock music. I could explain every song and further explain my love for this album but I'll leave it here. This one demands to be listened to.

And hey, it's only 34 minutes. Not much of a commitment at all. But if you get to the end, I'm pretty sure you'll be starting at the beginning. Back to Heavy Heart. And loving it.

Standout Tracks: Heavy Heart, Black Gold, Escape This Circus

The Last Broadcast

The Last Broadcast

doves

2002

BritPop / Rock / Atmospheric / Contemplative

...I want you to know this...my anger’s all but done…

This lyric from the track Satellites on the album The Last Broadcast by doves has been constantly in my mind the past few weeks. There’s been a lot of stops and starts. A lot of times trying to find a rhythm that I was used to and never getting there and getting angry about it. I put The Last Broadcast on to escape for a bit, to find some music that takes to me to good places mentally.

This album, I think a bit more focused musically than Lost Souls, is a cohesive marvel. From the intro leading into Words, leading to There Goes the Fear, and on and on, until you get to Caught By The River. Every track works together. Some tracks stick out more than others, of course, but the amazing thing about music is coming to a favorite album at a different stage in your life. Tracks that mattered 10 years ago – not as much anymore. Tracks that were overlooked back then now mean so much…

Satellites has been a huge help in my trying to evolve and adjust to different rhythms of life. Caught By The River means so much more now, as a father. Wow. N.Y. is a blast of nostalgia, remembering the time my wife and I lived in Brooklyn.

As one can probably tell, this is an album that has deep meaning for me. If you give it a spin I hope you enjoy it. And if you have specific records you love that you haven’t listened to in a while, put them on this week and see what happens. You just might find a new perspective in the familiar sound.

Standout Tracks – Satellites, Caught By The River, N.Y.

See you next week.

Ixora

Ixora

Copeland

2014

Indie / Contemplative / Introspective / Lush

Copeland is a band that has been in the background of most of my adult life. I found their first album right after moving to New York and it became a solace for me as I dealt with life in the big city and feeling alone surrounded by millions. Their albums are filled contemplative and introspective moments – chord progressions dig up memories, melodies make me reminisce. The band had a great run and went on a years long hiatus after the release of You Are My Sunshine. For me, there would be giant swaths of time between listens of Copeland’s records but when I did they would dominate my listening for weeks. Recently, I realized I hadn’t listened to them in probably years (changes, I guess?) and I fired up their comeback album, Ixora and it’s been on constant rotation since.

Ixora makes me think. It makes me settle in certain emotions, some of which aren’t necessarily positive but are...needed? I’m guessing we all have bands and albums that churn up the more challenging thoughts and moods of our lives. If you give it a listen, I hope you enjoy it.

Standout Tracks – Disjointed, I Can Make You Feel Young Again, Ordinary

See you next week. For real this time. Fingers crossed.

An Explanation for the Lack of Programming

Well, it’s been close to a month since the last album was posted and I think an explanation is in order. I was up against a deadline to get a book done and out in the world, so that took up a bunch of time and headspace. After that I went right into recording another book, this time with self-imposed deadline as I wanted to get the book recorded before Memorial Day weekend. However, the Sunday prior I started getting a scratchy throat and went the bed feeling the chills. Monday morning I tested positive for COVID...and that pretty much brings us today. I don’t really want to go into the details more than that. I’m better now and live has stabilized for the most part. The past few weeks were essentially adjusting to an alternate reality. I think my adjustment could have been much better. Music has been more of a contemplative, introspective tool right now than simply enjoying it and celebrating it. That made posting rather difficult in addition to really not having the time to do so.

Emblems

Emblems

matt pond PA

2004

Indie / Chamber / Cello / Favorite

When I started Album/Week I was in a deep period of hunting for and listening to new music. I was solely focused on what I hadn’t heard and therefore had diverted my attention from what I already knew and loved. Matt Pond PA was one of those loves…

Simply put, mppa is probably my favorite musical artist. I remember taking a field trip to Princeton Record Exchange while in college and taking a chance on a used copy of The Green Fury for $5. I bought it because I was intrigued and impressed by the instrumentation – mppa regularly featured a cellist (at the time Eve Miller) in their songs. Like so many people, the track Measure 3 made me stop and smile, but this post is not about that record, as good as it is. Or the one after that, The Nature of Maps

This is about Emblems, which I considered mppa’s magnum opus at the time (their next record, Several Arrows Later, is even better!). Emblems is an exceptional record. It features one of my top 2 mppa tracks (Grave’s Disease). Every song high quality. There’s a cohesion and looseness to Matt Pond and his bandmates, a confidence in the songs they’re performing.

Emblems is/was also a great signifier in my life. Living at home post-college, I couldn’t find it anywhere in CT. I was, however, going to New York for a day to attend orientation for the graduate school program I would be attending at NYU in the fall. I remember riding the Metro-North train to Grand Central, hoping I could find the time to find a record store and check the mppa section to see if they had it. I met someone in the program who was also a fellow music lover and after the orientation ended we walked to Union Square and entered the vast Virgin Megastore (RIP). They had a matt pond PA section! Incredible.

And Emblems was in stock. Thank goodness I packed my discman for the trip.

Matt Pond PA was and has been really the only band I’ve really evangelized. I told everyone I knew how good they are, how amazing Emblems was (and is!). This is a record that has followed me and has been a constant and a comfort in my life. Drives to Vermont, a cross-country roadtrip with a best friend, nostalgia, thinking of nature, thinking of my life, thinking of Matt Pond himself and his bandmates, my friends, my experiences, my wife, my family. All of it.

Emblems is one of a few records that has shaped who I am. Everyone has a few of those, right? I think? The music just hits you on a different level than everyone else. It’s what makes music and records so special.

Standout Tracks – The Butcher, East Coast E., Grave’s Disease, the entire record is quality!

See you next week.

The Department of Marine Sciences

The Department of Marine Sciences

Hello Meteor

2022

Synthwave / Retrowave / Chillwave / *wave / Concept?

Hello Meteor just keeps releasing new music and it’s all so good! The Department of Marine Sciences is the latest album, released last week and only a few months after Comfortable Loneliness. After the first couple of listens, this one seems to be a bit more...minimalist? stark? direct? If this is a concept album (I’m not sure) then it makes sense as each of the tracks have a defined purpose and seem to be telling a story for the record. It’s new territory and it works really well, each of the tracks having their own sound and purpose but with those wonderful Hello Meteor vibes. This is one that will get even better with more listens. Something to enhance those chill summer vibes, perhaps…

Standout Tracks – Arc of Gulls, Atmospheric Weather, The Stacks Dive

Lost Souls

Lost Souls

doves

2000

BritPop / Rock / Atmospheric / Contemplative

Admittedly, it’s been a difficult time, music-wise. Spring break for the kids happened, busy around the house, etc... Essentially I just haven’t been in a music-forward mindset. It’s resulted in a struggle to pick an album to recommend. However, more often than not, when I’m in this situation, I find myself going back to a few albums that resonate with me. Lost Souls by doves is one of them. It’s this haunting, atmospheric, contemplative fever-dream, filled with emotional moments and subtle britpop hooks. It demands to be played from start to finish. The record flows so well and the band was still in its infancy, despite playing music together for a long time (Sub Sub). They were clearly exploring these new sounds and allowed the music to take them wherever it led to. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Standout Tracks – Sea Song, Rise, The Cedar Room

See you next week.
